Adding RB Would be Wise Raiders Move
One of Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco's quietest moves so far was resigning running back Ameer Abdullah before the departure of star running back Josh Jacobs to the Green Bay Packers. The move signified the direction the Raiders were moving towards at the running back position since Jacobs' injury late last season.
The Raiders found similar success from their group approach to the running back position as Jacobs had given them by himself this past season. However, having Jacobs on the team undoubtedly allowed those running backs behind him on the depth chart to avoid the normal wear and tear of playing running back in the National Football League, as Jacobs accounted for most of the team's carries when healthy.
Zamir White and Abdullah's running styles fit nicely on the field. While White and Abdullah played well together down the stretch and proved they could handle most of the team's carries between the two of them, the Raiders should still consider adding a third serviceable running back to the mix.
White and Abdullah give the Raiders serviceable play at a very team-friendly rate. White and Abdullah's contracts combined are less than what Jacobs received from the Packers. The Raiders can add a third-quality running back to their roster and still pay less for all three backs than it would've cost to keep Jacobs.
It's a long football season, and few positions on the field take as much of a beating as running backs. That's why owners have decided to pay running backs less and less money. No matter how talented a team's running back or group of running backs may be, teams must be prepared for their best backs to miss time. It's the nature of the NFL.
As they prepare for next season, Las Vegas must prepare for the likelihood that White, Abdullah, or both could miss time at some point during the season. Whether through the draft or free agency, the Raiders must consider adding another quality running back to the roster.
