Raiders Insider Podcast:  Lamar Jackson & Other QBs

In the latest episode of the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast, we dig deep into the potential of Lamar Jackson, Jimmy Garoppolo, and other QBs.

HENDERSON, Nev.--The Las Vegas Raiders find themselves in a quagmire of their creation. Derek Carr is now the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, Jarrett Stidham is a free agent, and the only quarterback under contract is Chase Garbers.

While that statement is 100 percent factual, it doesn't mean things are at any level of panic mode in Henderson at the Silver and Black headquarters.

As Dave Ziegler and his staff scout the football world for the next Raiders quarterback, some interesting happening around the NFL create room for conjecture, conversation, and debate.

Is Jimmy Garoppolo the best fit for the Las Vegas Raiders? How concerned should the Raiders be when his most constant ability is that he does not have sufficient availability? While he is universally lauded as a terrific presence in the locker room and very talented, he is consistently unavailable due to injury.

Lamar Jackson is available because the Baltimore Ravens have placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on him.  That means if another team signs him to an offer sheet, the Ravens can match it and retain his services or receiver two first-round picks from the said team. Jackson is a former NFL MVP, and there is no doubt that with his age, and immense talent, he is a legitimate dominant quarterack.

The downside with Jackson is that, similar to Garoppolo, he is often unavailable due to injury. He is looking for a monster deal of more than $230 million fully guaranteed, similar to DeShaun Watson.

While Jackson is crystal clean off the field (unlike Watson), his contract demands are so large, combined with his injury history, and that is a very large risk for a team like the Las Vegas Raiders.

Are the NFL owners colluding against Jackson? We discuss it in detail.

We also dig into the discussion of how many quarterbacks will be selected in the first round of this year's NFL Draft. Should the Raiders make a move?

The NFL Draft will occur at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., from Thursday, April 25 to Saturday, April 29. ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network will broadcast all seven rounds.

March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.

The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
