HENDERSON, Nev--The internet was on fire yesterday as the Las Vegas Raiders and star running back Josh Jacobs saw the deadline pass for the franchised star to reach a long-term contract.

While both the Raiders General Manager Dave Ziegler and Coach Josh McDaniels were disappointed, so were Jacobs and the fans.

But readers of Raiders Today were not shocked. We reported months ago that the Raiders would apply the franchise tag. They did.

We have reported for months that we were not hopeful; in fact, we said we were not not statistically optimistic that a long-term deal would be struck.

The lack of optimism had nothing to do with the relationship between Jacobs and the Raiders.

We have made it abundantly clear that the Raiders brain-trust of Ziegler and McDaniels love Jacobs.  The respect is mutual.

The issue was how each side defined a long-term deal.

You can watch the entire podcast below:

Jacobs had the best season of his four-year career in 2022.  The NFL's leading rusher looked like the star  that everyone mutually agrees that he is.

But in the modern NFL, the short shelf life of top-tier production is very small. While Jacobs and his team had to make a business decision, so did the Raiders.

Making a business decision is not a sign of disrespect by either party.

Shortly after the deadline passed, far more people took to social media to attack the Raiders, but there were those, albeit a much lower number, that went after Jacobs.

Neither party was wrong. It's a business.

Every single person but one is paid to attend an NFL football game.  The vendors, ticket takers, Mark Davis, Dave Ziegler, ushers, security, players, coaches and the media like me.

The only person at an NFL game that isn't getting paid is the most important, the fan. Ironically, they, you, are the ones paying us.

Fans bristle when they hear that it is a business because, for them, it is not. It is a passion.

As we have reported for weeks, we expect Jacobs to play during the season. People close to the situation do not think he will sit home and forego more than 10 million dollars. But I think the odds are low that he shows up much before the end of camp, and that is fine.

Jacobs is a wonderful person and a consummate professional. He will be in shape and ready to go.

In this podcast, we also give you the latest that we are hearing on the healthy of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and defensive end Tyree Wilson.

The Las Vegas Raiders open training camp for the entire team on July 25, 2023.

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
