Ground Game is a Key to Las Vegas Raiders Success
The ground game was once again a key to the success of the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
In the 31-26 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, a total of five players were involved for 160 total rushing yards.
Running back Josh Jacobs, the go-to man for the Las Vegas running corps, was not 100 percent due to a knee injury. Even then, Jacobs ran 14 times for 65 yards and one touchdown.
However, as the Silver and Black got into the groove of the game, running back Devontae Booker shared running duties with Jacobs.
Booker ran eight times for 68 yards and had a 23-yard touchdown run.
In addition to the traditional running backs, Las Vegas got other players involved in the ground game.
Wide receiver Henry Ruggs III rushed an end-around run for a 10-yard gain.
Quarterback Derek Carr also got involved in the rushing game, adding two rushes for 14 yards. In the third quarter, Carr flew in for the first down in the red zone. That particular drive resulted in a touchdown.
It wasn’t just the ground game either.
In the air, Carr completed 12-of-23 passes for 165 yards. He threw two touchdowns.
While the passing game is a completely different aspect of the game, without a solid ground game, the Raiders passing game doesn’t happen.
The threat of a productive ground game opens up options to throw the ball anywhere on the field.
It also opens up the option to use a play-action play, throwing the ball deep down the field.
Ultimately, the ground game is a key for a win for the Raiders.
