Answering Your Las Vegas Raiders Questions, Emails
HENDERSON, Nev.--The Las Vegas Raiders fan base is ravenous for information, and each week we endeavor to feed that voracious appetite with our weekly question-and-answer article: So without any further adieu, here we go:
Hondo, I am very distraught that Tom Brady bought part of my team. I would love to hear your opinion. Was it a good or bad thing? --Thank you, Tracy B.
At worst, it was a neutral impact move, but I think it is great for the Raiders and even better for Las Vegas. He is the most highly visible athlete in the United States, a proven winner, and despite being a minority owner, you know he will be vocal about winning with Mark Davis. In my opinion, it was a terrific move.
Hondo, I was listening to some other media debate if the Raiders making a mistake in letting Rock Ya-Sin go. I agreed with them. Any thoughts? --Michael M.
I was not surprised. He played only in 11 games, and no matter how good he was, availability is the best ability in the NFL, and he wasn't available.
Hondo, Can you give us a little background on what happens when the Raiders "host a player"? What happens in these visits? Is it a conversation with Dave Zeigler and Coach with the player? Is it lunch and a show? Is it onfield drills? I would be curious about what goes on during these visits. --Chris B.
Sure, but you need to know that all player visits are different. A high-profile addition could include the owner, but not necessarily if the player is not a plan "A" guy. It usually includes a dinner, a tour of the facilities, and discussions with various coaches. It might not even feature the entire crew if it is a depth player. The better, and even at times the most needed, gets the biggest "Show," as they call it in the NFL.
There are plenty more questions below, but don't forget to watch the video where I also answer several more:
Hondo, I would like to know if you think the Raiders are a better or worse roster since last season ended up until now, and secondly, what is the biggest weakness on the team. --Thank you, Donovan C.
I think they are better, and I have spoken about that often in my podcasts that you can go back and listen to. As far as the biggest weakness, no doubt it is at linebacker.
Are Josh and Dave a package deal … can you see a scenario with one getting fired and not the other? --Mike K.
Yes, and no. Yes, Dave got the job because Mark Davis wanted Josh. No, Dave Ziegler won't be firing Josh McDaniels.
Hondo, I have heard you often say that you don't expect Hunter Renfrow back but expect nothing to happen until June 1. Why is that? --Thank you, T. Barksdale
The salary cap implications.
Do you think Neil Farrell Jr. and Matthew Butler will still factor into the Raiders' plans at Defensive Tackle? Both were drafted early last year, but the Raiders have several roster candidates for the position. --Josh D.
They could, but the effort and performance last year must be improved.
Hondo, it is clear that Davenate Adams is angry with the team. I am hearing he wants out. Will the Raiders trade him before the season? --Anthony J.
I do not think he is "angry" with the team. I do not in any way feel that he wants "out," and he will not be traded before the season.
Hondo, I read your story about the Raiders signing Greg VanRroten, but I don't know much about him. What makes that a good signing? --Valerie P.
He is durable and dependable. He will be competing immediately. While underrated and frankly underwhelming for most, it was a prototypical Dave Ziegler hire. A durable guy that has versatility and a good cap number.
Hondo, thank you for all you do for us fans. Your columns are the highlights of my week. I know it’s too early to ask this, but here goes: Given all you know right now, who do you see as the biggest surprise to make the 53-man roster? And, to be fair, who do you think will be the biggest surprise to be waived? Thanks again for all your great work. --God bless, Robert K.
Who is the biggest surprise to make it? Linebacker Drake Thomas, an undrafted free agent from N.C. State. What is the biggest surprise to be waived? Neil Farrell or Matthew Butler.
Now from our weekly Hate Hondo file:
Hondo, the Raiders giving away Derek Carr's number four insulted Derek, and the millions of his fans are still angry. Josh McDaniels has given us all the middle finger. You're not saying that proves you only speak for the team and have no backbone or integrity. You are a disgrace. --Juan M.
Hondo, I always liked you, but now that Derek is gone and you haven't written about how outrageous it is for the team to give away his number, I now get you. You are a fat puppet for Mark Davis, Josh McDaniels, and Dave Ziegler. I hope they put you right on their lap like the puppet you are, and you break their hip, you fat loser. This franchise will never recover from the loss of Derek and what they did to you. --Pete F.
