In this story:

HENDERSON, Nev.--The Las Vegas Raiders opened mandatory mini-camp today, and after the first practice, S Trevon Moehrig spoke.

Moehrig had a very successful rookie campaign but could not parlay that into an uptick of success in 2022.  He's working hard this offseason to fix that.

We have all of his comments that you can watch, and read the transcript below:

 Safety Tre’von Moehrig

Q: Coming into year three, what's been your focus for yourself individually?

Moehrig: "Really, just coming out every day in practice, coming in the film room every day just trying to learn something. Pick up something every day, whether it's something small, a small detail. But really every year it's just going to be getting better in every aspect of the game."

Q: You guys kind of have a revamped safety room a little bit with Marcus Epps coming in from the Eagles. What's it been like learning from him as a veteran in this league?

Moehrig: "Yeah, he's a great teammate. We're just getting to learn each other, learning how each other plays. The time we've been having together has been good. We've been bonding, we've been working hard. So, that’s what we're going to keep doing."

Q: This time last year you were in your second defensive system in two years. Has it slowed down a little bit now?

Moehrig: "Yeah, it definitely feels good to have the same staff and the same camaraderie that we had last year. That was big for me. It helps me and it helps the rest of the team build relationships and play together and faster."

Q: Between the transition to a new defense and then getting injured; did you feel like you were on unstable grounds last year?

Moehrig: "No, I really didn't. For me, like I just said, just getting better whether its recovery. Just being there for the team, being there for whatever the coaches needed. But no, I didn't feel like that at all."

Q: On the last day that you were available before you took your time off, you and I talked and you mentioned you had to get better this this offseason. What did you do?

Moehrig: "Man, like I said, just came in every day. Whatever the coaches asked of me to do, whatever the drills were, I just focused on the details. Try to be technically sound. Just trying to practice my technique, just like every other position, trying to just get better every offseason."

Q: Did you do a lot of film watching this offseason?

Moehrig: "Yeah, over the years, like I said, just my third year just picking up more film. Just learning more concepts, just learning more football. Being able to turn on that film and pinpoint some stuff that didn't know last year or the year before, it was a big deal. So, definitely watching more film."

Q: Without getting too much into strategy, what were some things that you kind of found difficult about Patrick Grahams system last year that you start to feel more comfortable doing now?

Moehrig: "Really, it's just being on the same page, the communication aspect of it. I've said it before, at the end of the day, it's all concepts. Just learning different concepts, learning different coaching schemes, how they want it done. But like I said, the biggest thing is just communication."

Q: They talked a lot about wanting to create more turnovers. I know in college that's something that you were known for and big on. Do you feel like being more confident in the scheme and in the system will allow you to be a little more confident in terms of taking chances and things like that?

Moehrig: "Yeah, definitely. Like I said, I think each year has been like that. I've been feeling better, more confident just with myself within the defensive scheme. So, definitely trying to do that and get our hands on the football."

Q: When you talk about the way last year you never kind of feeling on unstable ground. How did you deal with that mentally? Was it easy for you, was it difficult? Was it a process to learn.

Moehrig: "I'm a pretty levelheaded guy, so I mean, I just take it one step at a time. I approached it just with the same mindset as I do with everything else, just take it step-by-step, day-by-day. Try to get better, recover, and get back on the field as soon as possible."

Q: How would you say the early stages are in working with this newer group and the chemistry that you guys are building? Does it feel like there's a cohesion building with the defense?

Moehrig: "It's been fun. Coming out every day with the guys, it's been fun. It's business, we're coming here to work, but we’re also finding time to make relationships. Find time outside of football to, like I said, build relationships, build bonds, so when we step on that field, we're ready to go to war for our brothers. Feels good."

Q: What are your thoughts on the Golden Knights and how the team is feeding off their energy right now?

Moehrig: "It's dope. It's definitely dope. I went to the first game, man, just the energy was crazy. They're doing their thing. Excited to keep watching them and head to that championship, get that trophy."

Q: Have you been able to do anything, this offseason with TCU or going home and connecting with those guys?

Moehrig: " Not yet. Hopefully I get to go back during this little break and get to go see some old players, some old coaches. But yeah, I'd love to go back down to TCU and see my old stomping grounds."

Q: When you say going into your third year, does it mean it's going by fast?

Moehrig: "Yeah, it's going by fast, real fast. Yeah, I tell people every time, I feel like I still just got here. Just coming in the building is still that new feeling of just something new, really. Like you said, it's gone by fast. I can't believe it for real."

Q: How nice will it be to have that cohesion with the teammates like Nate [Hobbs] and the Amik [Robertson] and Maxx [Crosby] that you've been with for a while now? Moehrig: "Just guys that work hard like that, it just helps build camaraderie. You see guys working hard, playing fast, that makes you want to go harder for them. So, as long as we keep doing that, like you said, the cohesion will keep building and we'll play together fast and strong."
