David Highhill, General Manager, Sports Betting:

"We're proud to join these prominent sports industry stakeholders in this important effort. Legalized sports betting offers fans another way to engage with their favorite sports, but just as we must support problem gambling prevention and resourcing, we must also remain mindful of how sports betting is presented and advertised to consumers, and this coalition should greatly aid in that cause."

April 13, 2023, Per the NFL:  New QB Helmets

NFL impact data have driven customization, 9-times the rate of helmet improvement
Helmets considered top-performing only three years ago now prohibited due to development of safer models

NEW YORK, – As part of the release of its annual helmet testing results, the NFL and NFLPA announced today a quarterback-specific helmet will be available for the first time for the 2023 season. Half of all QB concussions occur when their helmets hit the ground. This helmet will reduce the severity of those specific impacts. The VICIS ZERO2 MATRIX QB performed 7% better in quarterback-specific testing than the most popular helmet worn by quarterbacks last season.
Helmets designed for the experiences of specific position groups is the latest innovation in the advance of helmet technology. Position-specific helmet designs take into account the unique locations and speeds of head impacts for each position group to offer players more customized protection. The league shares a wide range of game impact data with helmet manufacturers to inform their enhanced designs, including data from mouthguard sensors and advanced video footage. Position-specific testing will be extended to additional positions in the coming years.

The addition of a quarterback-specific helmet follows the introduction in the 2021 season of an offensive and defensive linemen-specific helmet. Two OL and DL-specific helmets now top the 2023 NFL-NFLPA helmet rankings.

“Helmets customized to the unique experiences of a position group promotes player safety,” said Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President overseeing Player Health and Safety. “This is the next evolution in a rapidly advancing market for improved helmets. We’re proud to share the data necessary to design and build better equipment.”

The NFL and NFLPA’s release today of the results of their annual helmet laboratory testing demonstrate continued helmet safety innovation. Jointly appointed biomechanical engineers ranked 50 helmet models, including three new models. Two of the new models ranked in the ‘Top-Performing’ group, continuing a rate of improvement in helmet performance that has increased by nine times since before the start of the helmet testing program in 2015.

Rate of innovation is evidenced by helmets’ rankings over time: Seven helmets that were in the Top-Performing group in 2020 are now Newly-Prohibited for the season ahead.

The helmet rankings poster ranks and groups helmets according to their laboratory performance into three categories: Top-Performing (green); Not Recommended (yellow); and Newly-Prohibited (red). More than 99% of players wore Top-Performing helmets last season. As part of an NFL-NFLPA policy, Not Recommended and Newly-Prohibited helmets may only be worn by players who wore those helmets during the 2022 NFL season. No players will be permitted to wear the Newly-Prohibited models starting in the 2024 season.

Evidence of helmet innovation extends beyond the 2023 rankings released today, as demonstrated by the three awardees of the NFL Helmet Challenge, a $3-million competition designed to accelerate helmet performance and safety for NFL players.

The awardees – Kollide, Xenith, and Impressio – submitted helmet prototypes that demonstrate it is possible to both exceed performance of existing commercially available helmets while also decreasing helmet weight. Their submissions reflect unique designs, including the use of advanced, energy-absorbing materials such as liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE) material, 3D printed mesh, and engineered energy control structures to redirect and optimize absorption of the forces from on-field contacts. The helmets drew recognition from the NFL Head Health Tech Helmet Challenge Committee, which includes experts in biomechanics and sports equipment safety, including engineers, scientists, and researchers.

The three awardees will continue work to further develop their prototypes in an effort to increase the field-readiness of their respective helmet models.

April 10, 2023, Per the NFL:

The National Football League’s ‘NFL Africa’ program is set to expand to Kenya as the League continues to invest in growing the game at all levels across the continent.

The expansion will see the NFL host a talent identification camp and NFL Flag football showcase in Nairobi, Kenya this April (10-15), underlining a long-term, multi-market commitment to developing more ways to serve a growing fan base in Africa.

“Growing the NFL globally is a major strategic priority for the League and developing our footprint and fandom in Africa is an important part of this vision,” said Brett Gosper, Head of NFL Europe & Africa. “We are excited to expand NFL Africa into Kenya and look forward to creating opportunities for the next generation of African players and fans there to engage with our sport. From NFL Flag inspiring young people to play the game around the world, to building pathways for more international athletes to play in the NFL, there is a place in our sport for everyone.”

With more than 125 players of African descent (born in Africa or first generation born in the U.S.) from 15 countries across the continent currently playing in the NFL, a talent identification camp for promising young athletes will take place this month in Kenya.

Twenty-nine prospects aged 16 – 21, from African nations including Cameroon, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal will take part in a three-day NFL Combine-style camp to showcase their skills.

Participants will be competing for invites to the NFL International Combine, NFL International Player Pathway Program, or the opportunity to join the NFL Academy in the UK as part of League efforts to advance pathways to play in the NFL for international athletes.

Players were invited to attend the NFL event, spearheaded by Osi Umenyiora, a two-time Super Bowl champion who was born in the UK to Nigerian parents, after taking part in Umenyiora’s ‘The Uprise’ initiative, which held scouting events for more than 200 athletes across six countries in recent months.

“It has always been a dream of mine to bring the NFL to Africa and over the past couple of years The Uprise and NFL have made that dream a reality,” said Umenyiora, NFL’s lead ambassador for NFL Africa. “It’s been incredible to see the opportunities it has provided through the International Player Pathway Program, the NFL Academy and Flag football, and this is only the beginning.”

Several current NFL players will join the activities in Kenya including Brian Asamoah, Minnesota Vikings (Ghana), Arnold Ebiketie, Atlanta Falcons (Cameroon), Paulson Adebo, New Orleans Saints (Benin), Ikem Ekwonu, Carolina Panthers (Nigeria) and Emmanuel Ogbah, Miami Dolphins (Nigeria).

An NFL Flag football showcase is also planned, introducing the game to young people from 10 schools across Nairobi. Alongside the showcase, the NFL will host training clinics for local teachers and the Kenyan Federation of American Football to help develop coaching skills to deliver NFL Flag football and expand participation across the country.

“The Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) is honored to be partnering with the National Football League to further the sport of American football through the introduction of NFL Flag football in schools,” said Dr. Doreen Odhiambo, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Academy of Sports. “As part of a mandate to develop sports talent across the country, KAS together with the NFL have engaged 10 schools through the Ministry of Education from the Kasarani area to participate in a 12-week NFL Flag football program, culminating in a tournament later this year. KAS is delighted to bring this new sport through the school talent pathway.”

George Alwanga, President of the Kenyan Federation of America Football (KFAF), added: “We are delighted to be partnering with the National Football League to showcase and deliver a Flag football program for young people in Kenya. This partnership will have a positive impact on the future growth of Flag football in the country, encouraging more schools and communities to embrace and enjoy the sport, and aligns with KFAF's objectives to develop the sport across the country and provide an opportunity for young Kenyans to learn and play the game.”

NFL Flag is one of the fastest growing sports globally. The sport empowers young athletes, boys and girls, around the world and instils in them a lifelong passion for the game. Flag football is fun, exciting, and accessible for all; with women and girls driving some of the fastest growth in the sport.

Flag football is currently played by more than 20 million people in over 100 countries. It provides a structured opportunity for youth to play the game whilst discovering the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork, and friendship both on and off the field.

The expansion follows a successful delivery of programs in Ghana in 2022, including talent identification camps, NFL Flag football clinics and fan events held across the year in Accra.

The NFL’s ongoing football development efforts in Ghana saw a youth NFL Flag football team represent the nation in the NFL International Flag Football Championships at the 2023 Pro Bowl Games in Las Vegas. The team, despite only having learned the game a few months earlier, made it to the semi-finals of the 10-team competition.

The events in April will take place at the Kasarani Sports Complex, Nairobi, supported by the Kenyan Government and Kenya Academy of Sports.

In the 1970s, Jefferson starred for the Toledo Troopers of the National Women's Football League (NWFL), where she rushed for over 1,000 yards in five straight seasons and finished her career with more touchdowns than Jim Brown. This feature tells the story of a sports pioneer through the words of Jefferson's diary she kept during her playing days.

"Linda Jefferson's story is one of triumph and perseverance in a time where women playing a game like football was unheard of," said Shayna Haynes, Executive Producer. "She's living proof that female athletes can achieve anything when given the opportunity and space to succeed."

NFL 360's Women In Football episode premieres Friday, March 17 at 8 p.m. EDT on NFL Network. The latest episode of the Emmy Award-winning series is produced by an all-female storytelling team. March 13, 2023, 2023 NFL Free Agency Questions & Answers

SALARY CAP SET AT $224.8 MILLION

Q. When does the 2023 free agency signing period begin?

A. At 4 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, March 15.

Q. When is the two-day negotiating period for potential unrestricted free agents?

A. From 12 p.m. EDT on Monday, March 13 until 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents upon expiration of their 2022 player contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The two-day negotiating period applies only to prospective unrestricted free agents. It does not apply to players who have received, or who may receive, a required tender applicable to the 2023 League Year (e.g., Exclusive Rights Players, Restricted Free Agents, Franchise Players or Transition Players).

Q. What are the categories of free agency?

A. Players are either “restricted free agents” or “unrestricted free agents.” A restricted free agent may be subject to a “qualifying offer.” A restricted or unrestricted free agent may be designated by his prior club as its franchise player or transition player.

Q. What is the time period for free agency signings this year?

A. For restricted free agents, from March 15 to April 21. For unrestricted free agents who have received a tender from their prior club by the Monday immediately following the final day of the NFL Draft for the 2023 League Year (i.e., May 1), from March 15 to July 24 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). For franchise players, from March 15 until the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season, Nov. 14. For transition players, from March 15 until July 24. After July 24 and until 4 p.m. EDT on the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season, Nov. 14, the prior club has exclusive negotiating rights to unrestricted free agents and transition players. If the above-listed players do not sign by Nov. 14, they must sit out the season.

Q. What is the difference between a restricted free agent and an unrestricted free agent?

A. In the 2023 league year, players with three accrued seasons who have received a qualifying offer become restricted free agents when their contracts expire at the conclusion of the 2022 league year on March 15. Unrestricted free agents have completed four or more accrued seasons. Upon expiration of his 2022 contract, an unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any club with no draft-choice compensation owed to his old club.

Q. What constitutes an “accrued season”?

A. Six or more regular season games on a club's active/inactive, reserve/injured or reserve/physically unable to perform lists.

Q. How do the free agency rules apply to restricted free agents?

A. If a player with three accrued seasons has received a “qualifying offer” (a salary tender predetermined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players) from his old club, he can negotiate with any club through April 21. If the restricted free agent signs an offer sheet with a new club, his old club can match the offer and retain him because the qualifying offer entitles it to a “right of first refusal” on any offer sheet the player signs. If the old club does not match the offer, it may receive draft-choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer. If an offer sheet is not executed on or before April 21, the player’s negotiating rights revert exclusively to his old club. In addition, prior to the start of free agency a player who would otherwise be a restricted free agent may be designated by his old club as its franchise player or transition player.

Q. What are the right of first refusal/qualifying offer amounts for players who have completed three accrued seasons?

A. For right of first refusal only, a one-year salary of at least $2,627,000.

For right of first refusal and compensation at the player’s original draft round, a one-year salary of at least $2,743,000 or 110 percent of the 2022 Paragraph 5 salary, whichever is greater.

For right of first refusal and compensation of one second-round draft selection, a one-year salary of at least $4,304,000 or 110 percent of the 2022 Paragraph 5 salary, whichever is greater.

For right of first refusal and compensation of one first-round draft selection, a one-year salary of at least $6,005,000 or 110 percent of the 2022 Paragraph 5 salary, whichever is greater.

For right of first refusal and compensation of only one first-round draft selection, but any provision in the new club’s offer sheet waiving or limiting the new club’s ability to designate the player as a franchise or transition player is not a principal term and need not be matched by the prior club, a one-year salary of at least $6,505,000 or 110 percent of the 2022 Paragraph 5 salary, whichever is greater.

Q. What determines an unrestricted free agent?

A. A player with four or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired. He is free to sign with any club, with no draft-choice compensation owed to his old club, through July 24 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). At that point, his negotiating rights revert exclusively to his old club if by May 1 the old club tendered the player a one-year contract for 110 percent of his prior year’s salary. His old club then has until the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season (Nov. 14) to sign him. If he does not sign by that date, he must sit out the season. If no tender is offered by May 1, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season.

Q. What determines a franchise player?

A. The salary offer by a player’s club determines what type of franchise player he is: exclusive or non-exclusive.

An “exclusive” franchise player – not free to sign with another club – is offered the greater of (i) the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year as of the end of the restricted free agent signing period on April 21; or (ii) the amount of the required tender for a non-exclusive franchise player, as explained below. Article 10, Section 2(a)(i) of the CBA sets forth the methodology, known as the “Cap Percentage Average,” for calculating the required tender for a non-exclusive franchise player:

The Nonexclusive Franchise Tender shall be a one year NFL Player Contract for (A) the average of the five largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position . . . at which the Franchise Player participated in the most plays during the prior League Year, which average shall be calculated by: (1) summing the amounts of the Franchise Tags for players at that position for the five preceding League Years; (2) dividing the resulting amount by the sum of the Salary Caps for the five preceding League Years . . . ; and (3) multiplying the resulting percentage by the Salary Cap for the upcoming League Year . . . (the “Cap Percentage Average”) . . . ; or (B) 120 percent of his Prior Year Salary, whichever is greater . . . .

If a club extends a required tender to a “non-exclusive” franchise player pursuant to this section, the player shall be permitted to negotiate a player contract with any club, except that draft-choice compensation of two first-round draft selections shall be made in the event he signs with a new club.

Q. How many franchise players and transition players can a team designate each season?

A. A club can designate one franchise player or one transition player among its potential restricted or unrestricted free agents.

Q. Can a club decide to withdraw its franchise or transition designation on a player?

A. Yes. A club can withdraw its franchise or transition designation, and the player then automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent, either immediately if the tender is withdrawn after the start of the 2023 league year, or when his 2022 contract expires if the tender is withdrawn before the start of the 2023 league year.

Q. What is the salary cap for 2023?

A. The salary cap is $224,800,000 per club.

Q. When must teams be in compliance with the salary cap?

A. At the start of the 2023 league year, which began at 4 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, March 15.

Q. If a team is under the salary cap at the end of a given season, can the team “carry over” room to the next season?

A. Yes. A team may carry over room from one league year to the following league year by submitting notice to the NFL prior to 4 p.m. EDT on the day following the team’s final regular-season game, indicating the amount of room that the club wishes to carry over.

Q. What is the maximum amount of room that a club can carry over?

A. A club can carry over 100 percent of its remaining 2022 room to its adjusted salary cap for 2023.

March 3, 2023 NFL Launches NFL Career Tours

Professional Development Program Includes 60 NFL Players and Legends

NFL Players Gain Valuable Experience from Industry Leaders

The NFL today launched a professional development program called NFL Career Tours, to provide current players and Legends with exclusive access to major organizations to learn about various career opportunities and network with industry leaders.

Designed by the NFL Player Engagement Department, which supports NFL players and their families during their playing experience and beyond, NFL Career Tours includes 60 current NFL players and Legends attending the behind-the-scenes experience to learn more about entertainment, sports business, and the music industry. This year, the NFL has partnered with the Fifth Season and Hidden Empire film groups, Nike, and Interscope Records.

"We are very excited about the innovation of the offseason player programming," said Tracy Perlman, NFL Senior Vice President of Player Operations. "The career tours will give players an opportunity to experience different industries as they look to explore their off-field passions."

"The NFL Career Tours gives our players an opportunity to see beyond the football field and prepare for their future by networking and learning the key elements to advance in various industries," said Cleveland Browns Director of Player Engagement Ron Brewer. "We are excited that our players have decided to take advantage and will support them in every way to help them grow and succeed in areas outside of our game."

"As athletes — and by extension entertainers — it's important for us to understand the business of entertainment and the layered work that goes into building revenue, compelling storytelling and consumer connection," said Kelvin Beachum of the Arizona Cardinals. "I'm grateful to the NFL for providing the experience to learn and understand the industry at every level to inspire more well-rounded career development."

On March 6-7, attendees traveled to Los Angeles to work with Fifth Season and Hidden Empire to gain an all-access look into all facets of the entertainment industry, including acting, casting for roles, directing, financing, producing, and distributing movies.

Another group traveled to Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., on March 13-14 for a look at the sports business industry, including product development, marketing, and branding. They will also tour Nike's state-of-the-art campus.

Finally, a third group of attendees traveled to Interscope Records in Los Angeles on March 20-21. They will learn about all aspects of the music industry, including becoming an artist, managing an artist, promoting the music, operating a record label, and envisioning the money needed to be successful. The participants will also connect with artists, producers, and various executives involved with Interscope Records, Universal Music, and Interscope Geffen A&M Records.

March 2, 2023 Statement By NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell:

"The NFL community is deeply saddened by the passing of Jerry Richardson. The Carolina Panthers are a testament to his extraordinary and tireless dedication to the community. But his league-first attitude as seen through his leadership of numerous NFL committees, including the Stadium Committee and Management Council Executive Committee, helped pave the way for a series of public-private stadium partnerships throughout the country, and collective bargaining agreements that continue to support the growth of the game.
"As a former player himself, Jerry cared deeply about the welfare of players and the labor agreements he helped negotiate have led to improved pay and benefits for generations of players.
From a personal perspective, he was a wise and caring advisor to me, his fellow owners, and many Panthers players and coaches over the years.
On the NFL’s behalf, I extend our sincere condolences to Jerry’s wife, Rosalind, and their family."
