Telesco Gives Inside Look at NFL Draft Philosophy

New Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco gives a brilliant insight into one of his key NFL Draft philosophies.

LAS VEGAS, Nev.--New Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco recently spoke about one of his key NFL Draft philosophies.

The Raiders leader discussed what he is looking for and hopes to accomplish late in the critical NFL selection process, specifically the sixth and seventh rounds.

Appearing on the Sunset Rewind, Telesco said: “In the seventh round, it's the best player up there. We don’t really fill needs in the draft, just because the needs we have at draft time, those needs are gonna change.”

Telesco went on to give some brilliant insight into his theory of drafting.

“You are drafting a player for four or five years, so I am really thinking more about down the road, and down the road, I don’t really know what our needs will be,” Telesco said.

Telesco continued delivering a deep look into his NFL Draft doctrine by saying: “A lot of it is the best player there, but certainly, sixth, seventh round I mean I hate to call them lottery tickets, but the hit rates so low in that round. So we just want to get the best player. Hopefully, he makes the practice squad.”

Telesco then discussed a Raiders’ rival, the San Francisco 49ers, and what they did with quarterback Brock Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant in the NFL Draft.

“They (49ers) saw some things in Brock Purdy, enough, then said let’s take a chance on him in the seventh round," Telesco said. "Lo and behold, he takes them to a Super Bowl.

Telesco then finished his thought on late-round drafting by saying: “But, the hit rate is kind of low so you so trying to find someone who kind of at least can make it on special teams early on, make the practice squad where they can kind of develop, so its really the best player there.”

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
