 Cornerback Sam Webb

Q: What have you seen about this secondary's ability trying to come together as the season comes close?

Webb: "I think we do a good job of building camaraderie and building our brotherhood, helping each other out with plays and stuff like that. We do a good job of keeping each other up and stuff like that. So, we're building."

Q: It's your second year in the system, how much better are you just because you came into camp knowing the system and not learning it?

Webb: "Me personally, I think it's just a lot easier, it comes a lot more second-hand. It's very great right now just coming in knowing the playstyle that we are looking for and stuff like that."

Q: What are the benefits of having joint practices against a team like the 49ers here over the next couple of days?

Webb: "Competing against a different team, seeing a different scheme, going against a different quarterback. The competition will rise up a little bit. These are all good things that we look forward to."

Q: What did you think about going against Jimmy Garoppolo today, it looked like he got into a little bit of a rhythm, starting to shake that rust off. Your thoughts?

Webb: "I've got high expectations for Jimmy [Garoppolo]. He's a good quarterback, and we all know that he can get it done."

Q: What are some things you did this offseason to help you prepare for your second season?

Webb: "Honestly, just a lot of mental work. We all know we've got the physical attributes to do it, so I was just working more on my mental skills and stuff like that."

Q: How many conversations have you had with Marcus Peters and what do you think he brings to your room and what can you learn from him?

Webb: "He's an older vet who I think brings a certain swagger and intelligence to the room. And he's just good people too, as well. So, it's nice being around him."

Q: What are your expectations for yourself this season?

Webb: "I've always thought highly of myself, whether I'm in a good position or bad. I've got high expectations for myself that exceed anybody else's because I've got to believe in myself before anybody else does."

Q: Do you look at the depth chart and see where you might fit in? Do you worry about competition that way as far as camp goes?

Webb: "No, not really. I mean, we all kind of work and as long as I know I'm staying available, then that's my best ability."

Q: Last year you talked to me about perfecting your craft. What does that look like to you as you head into year two?

Webb: "To me, it's just staying consistent, perfecting little things that we always talk about every single day and not getting bored of it."

Q: How would you assess your first season? Did you kind of take time in the offseason to look back and study yourself, or how do you kind of break ir down? How much do you think about how last year went?

Webb: "I think about it a little bit, but I try not to dwell on the past. I use it more of a motivation and I try to just learn from my mistakes really."

Q: Through training camp the last couple of weeks, you guys had a bunch of high school football teams come through here. I talked to some coaches and they got a lot out of it and really liked watching you guys. You're still a young guy, you're not that far removed from it. How much would you have enjoyed that experience? And are those types of community things cool to you?

Webb: "Oh yeah, absolutely. As you know, I went to Missouri Western. We held the Chiefs training camp and a lot of high schoolers would come in, and it was just nice to be able to connect with them too on a college level. So, I think it's important for the youth to be able to see guys coming from every direction and still make it to the league and stuff like that."

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
