Los Angeles Rams Ex Jared Goff In Line For Massive Lions Extension - Report
In 2019, the Los Angeles Rams made Jared Goff a made man by signing him to a four-year, $134 million extension with $110 million guaranteed, the most in league history at the time.
Now, five years later, Goff could be in line for another massive payday. This time, though, the contract won't be coming from the Rams, but from his new team, the Detroit Lions.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Lions are expected to offer Goff a contract worth $45 million - $50 million annually, and there is "mutual interest" in an extension.
"He wants to be there. Only 29 years old, due to make about $28 million this year, so he's going to have to be in that threshold of $45- maybe even $50 million a year based on the way he's played. So, it's going to take some time to get that done," Fowler said Sunday on "SportsCenter," via Bleacher Report.
Back in 2019, the Rams rewarded Goff with an extension after he earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections and helped the Rams make it to Super Bowl LIII.
Soon after, though, that contract began to look like a mistake. Goff's play took a step back over the following two seasons, and the Rams didn't have as much success as a result.
In 2021, L.A. sent Goff and multiple draft picks to Detroit in the blockbuster Matthew Stafford trade. The Rams found immediate success as they won Super Bowl LVI in their first season with Stafford under center.
Since then, though, Goff has completely revitalized his career with the Lions. Over the past two seasons, the first overall pick in 2016 has thrown for 9,013 yards with 59 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. Goff recently said that the trade to Detroit was "the greatest thing to ever happen" to him.
While the relationship between Goff and the Rams somewhat deteriorated over his final days with the team, it seems both parties have found what they were looking for with the trade.
