Rams QB Stetson Bennett To Return For Offseason Workouts
After missing his entire rookie season, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett is reportedly set to make his return to the team soon.
According to general manager Les Snead (per a Los Angeles Times report), Bennett is currently working out in Dallas and the team plans to welcome him back for offseason workouts.
Bennett, 26, stepped away from the Rams in September for undisclosed reasons. He spent the entire regular season on the reserve/non-football illness list. In three preseason games, he completed 36 of 62 passes for 347 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
The Rams selected Bennett in the fourth round of last year's draft with the idea of him being Matthew Stafford's top backup. Once he took leave in September, though, that plan went out the window.
L.A. spent half the season with Brett Rypien as Stafford's backup, but when he struggled in place of the injured starter, the team decided to pivot. The Rams signed veteran quarterback Carson Wentz as their top backup for the rest of the season, and he even started the regular season finale as Stafford and other starters rested for the playoffs.
Now, the Rams have added former San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to back up Stafford. Garoppolo, 32, will miss the season's first two games due to a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.
Bennett, a two-time national champion at Georgia, has faced many obstacles throughout his time playing football, and this leave of absence is just the latest in a long line of setbacks.
