Rams Aren't Ruling Out Picking QB in NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Rams could be eyeing an heir to Matthew Stafford in this spring's NFL Draft.
In this story:

The Los Angeles Rams have their starting quarterback for the 2024 season - future Hall of Famer, Matthew Stafford.

However, at 36 years old, not only has Stafford faced his fair share of injuries throughout his career, but he also isn't getting any younger.

In other words, eventually, the Rams are going to have to find his heir.

They attempted to do just that last spring, picking Georiga's Stetson Bennett on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft. Suffice it to say, however, that hasn't worked out - at least not yet.

That said, during Rams Revealed Live, team COO Kevin Demoff was clear that, despite the miss on Bennett, L.A. would not be afraid to go QB again in this year's draft.

As long as it's the right one of course.

“I don’t think that that would discourage us from taking another swing at a quarterback prospect but it has to be the right one,” Demoff said to Rams season ticket holders. “When you walk in thinking you need it is when you make mistakes.”

Sean McVay echoed that sentiment on Wednesday, impressing the need for a No. 2 QB.

"Right now, we got Matthew Stafford, and really in our minds, we don't have a backup quarterback that's on this roster," said McVay.

Fortunately for the Rams, they will have plenty of opportunities to take QB in the upcoming draft. In fact, some have even projected the Rams to select Stafford's heir apparent as early as Round 1.

Could Spencer Rattler Be Matthew Stafford's Heir As Rams Quarterback?

And while there hasn't been a significant indication that the Rams would consider that as an option, Demoff, Les Snead, Sean McVay, and company could very well do so, should the right player fall to them at No. 19.

“I think that’s the great thing if you sit at 19, conceptually, is you’re going to have a bunch of players probably fall to you who you had as top-15 picks,” Demoff said. “You may have the chance if someone falls who you have as a top-eight pick and they fall to 14-15, are you going up and getting them? Or you may have 4-5 players fall to you that you didn’t expect to be there and you feel comfortable trading back.”

The Rams will get a good look at the upcoming quarterback crop - and perhaps their future - this week during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.
