Is Rams LB Ernest Jones 'Built For' Captain Role?

Los Angeles Rams linebacker Ernest Jones wants to wear the captain's patch in the near future.

Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris stressed during Thursday's press conference that he needs a young player to step up as a leader on his side of the ball.

23-year-old linebacker Ernest Jones might be the answer to Morris' prayers.

Jones is entering his third season in the NFL after winning the Super Bowl in year one, then going 5-12 in year two. Jones had two of the best linebackers of the decade as leaders in Von Miller (2021) and Bobby Wagner (2022).

Jones told the show, "Inside Rams Camp," how they've shaped his early career in different ways.

"From Von, you just learn how to be a champion and what it truly takes," Jones said. "He's done it twice now, so it was definitely great to learn from him. Bobby taught me how to be a leader. Even when things aren't going well, just continue to push guys and continue to keep everyone uplifted."

Jones hopes to be named a captain in the near future as he's beginning to emerge as the young defensive leader.

"(Being named captain) would mean everything to me," Jones said. "I tell these guys all the time that I love these men and I'd do anything for them. For them to vote for me and think of me that highly, that would be amazing."

Jones explained the leadership attributes that he imposes on himself to earn the captain's patch.

"I know I could go out there and execute on the field, but for the most part, I want these guys to know that I'm there for them at any point outside of football as well," Jones said. "I've grown into this role and I always say 'I am built for this,',"

Jones has already settled into a nice role with the defense. He recorded 61 tackles while playing 43 percent of defensive snaps as a rookie, then 114 tackles while playing 66 percent of snaps in his second season. The under-the-radar linebacker believes the Rams defense is also overlooked.

"Our energy is unmatched," Jones said. "I don't think anyone will come out here and have more energy on the defensive side of the ball. We're young and trying to make a name for ourselves."

Jones name-dropped a few rookies that may also have a great start to their NFL journey.

"You got (Tre'Vius) Tomlinson at cornerback, I love the way he's playing," Jones said. "The entire d-line, (the Rams) couldn't have drafted or picked a better bunch of undrafted guys that could truly step in and help right off the bat. All of these guys are showing me sparks. Byron Young is really impressive. I'm excited about all of them."
