Rams Should 'Bring Back' QB Baker Mayfield Says ESPN's Bill Barnwell
The Los Angeles Rams learned the hard way last season about how valuable the backup quarterback position is.
Not only did they struggle when Matthew Stafford was lost for the year with an injury, but they had to watch a divisional rival in the San Francisco 49ers make the NFC championship with a third string rookie at quarterback.
So, acquiring a solid backup to Stafford is a must for the Rams this offseason. However, ESPN's Bill Barnwell believes that solution is simple - bring back Baker Mayfield.
When the Rams acquired Mayfield late in the season off of waivers, expectations were not high for the quarterback. In the five games he played as a Ram, though, Mayfield showed flashes of what made him the No. 1 overall pick.
He finished his five-game stint with the Rams throwing for 850 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions and a 63.6 completion percentage. Bringing him back is a move that could benefit both parties.
For the Rams, they get a reliable backup quarterback should Stafford miss any time again this season due to injury.
As for Mayfield, while he likely wants to start somewhere once again, that may not be likely. The quarterback needy teams will likely address their need via the draft or trade market with guys like Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson potentially on the move.
Mayfield might not be the quarterback to lead the Rams back to the Super Bowl, but he is a reliable backup - and after last season, that is something the Rams can't afford to go without.
