Rams Hire Tom Brady's Former Coach to Sean McVay Staff
The Los Angeles Rams aren’t finished filling out their coaching staff just yet.
Per Ian Rapoport, Los Angeles is expected to hire former Las Vegas Raiders tight end coach Jerry Schuplinski as a senior offensive assistant.
The hire comes shortly after Rams head coach Sean McVay announced the additions of several other coaches hired earlier in the offseason. Of course, Los Angeles has had to fill multiple holes in the staff after the departure of defensive coordinator Raheem Morris left the staff shorthanded and the rest of the league attempted to poach rising stars under the tutelage of McVay.
Schuplinski played a role in the impact rookie Michael Mayer had on the Raiders offense. Despite dealing with injuries, Mayer found the end zone twice en route to 27 catches and 304 yards.
Despite working with tight ends last season, Schuplinski’s coaching career has largely been spent assisting quarterbacks, including the greatest of all time, Tom Brady.
Schuplinski began his coaching career at John Carroll at the beginning of the millennium before taking a head coaching gig at the high school level from 2002 to 2006. After six seasons as a special teams coach for Case Western Reserve, he made the jump to the professional level, joining former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
With New England, Schuplinski won three Super Bowls.
There, he spent three seasons as an offensive assistant and another three as the assistant quarterbacks coach. He held the same position in 2019 with the Miami Dolphins before two as quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants, helping to develop young passer Daniel Jones.
He was a senior offensive assistant coach for the Raiders for a year before taking control of the tight end room.
Rams Set to Hire College Coach as New Pass Game Specialist
Schuplinski brings a well-rounded coaching resumé to Los Angeles, which may be needed given the transition the Rams find themselves in. Should the heir to quarterback Matthew Stafford be found in this year’s NFL Draft, it’s likely Schuplinski will play a role in his development.
It would be overly ambitious to read much more into the hire, but adding another well-respected mind to the staff is only good news.
