Rams Ex John Johnson Hints At Signing With Chargers?

Few free agents remain as the NFL offseason continues to wind down, and among those few players is a former Los Angeles Ram.

Safety John Johnson, who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Rams, is still looking for a new home. He left L.A. in the 2021 offseason, signing a three-year deal worth $33.75 million with the Cleveland Browns. In March, the Browns released Johnson to save cap space, and four months later, he remains a free agent.

However, a recent social media post could hint at a return to Southern California, but not with the Rams. Johnson appeared in a recent tweet by Los Angeles Chargers defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day, working out with him and fellow Chargers lineman Morgan Fox.

Joseph-Day and Fox are both former Rams as well and played alongside Johnson for multiple seasons. Fox spent five seasons with the Rams, before playing one season with the Carolina Panthers and joining the Chargers in 2022. Joseph-Day also joined the Chargers last season after playing the previous three with their cross-city counterparts.

Perhaps this is just a case of former teammates catching up, but it also isn't the first time this offseason Johnson has been linked to the Chargers.

Shortly after Johnson's release from the Browns, ESPN's Jeremey Fowler reported that the Chargers had interest in the safety. Rumors have persisted throughout the offseason, but nothing official has materialized. Maybe Johnson working out with two Chargers could be a sign something is finally close, though.

In his time with the Rams, Johnson appeared in 54 games and started 48. He quickly became a key part of the Rams' defense, totaling 350 tackles, 32 passes defended, and eight interceptions.

It's also notable that Chargers coach Brandon Staley is yet another former Ram, being their defensive coordinator in 2020. Johnson had a strong year under Staley, so a reunion could be an intriguing possibility. If Johnson does join the Chargers, it would only further the connection between the two L.A.-based teams.
