Kansas City Chiefs Sign Los Angeles Rams Ex QB Carson Wentz as Patrick Mahomes Backup
The Los Angeles Rams have already found themselves a new backup quarterback for Matthew Stafford, signing Jimmy Garoppolo during free agency.
Now, former backup Carson Wentz, who first signed with the team in November of last season, has found a new home, signing a deal with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, according to reports.
With the Chiefs, Wentz will likely serve as the primary backup to Superstar QB Patrick Mahomes - a position that was occupied by Blaine Gabbert last season.
Since taking over as the full-time starter for Kansas City in 2018, Mahomes has rarely missed a start, playing in 1at least 16 games in four of his six seasons as the starter. In the two seasons he played less than 16 games, he played in 14 (2019) and 15 (2020).
In other words, if Mahomes trend of staying healthy continues, Wentz may not be in line for much playing time in Kansas City. That said, they will have an experience vet behind him that can win football games in the event of an injury.
During his time with the Rams, Wentz played in two games, starting one, and completed 17 of 24 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.
In total, Wentz has played in 95 games in his career, starting 93, and thrown for 22,292 yards and 153 touchdowns with 67 interceptions. He also earned Second-Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod in 2017.
