Rams G Logan Bruss Staging Comeback After Missing Rookie Season
Injuries are an unfortunate reality in any sport, especially one as physical as football.
What's even more unfortunate is when injuries happen to rookies who are still trying to adjust to life in the NFL. That's the situation Los Angeles Rams guard Logan Bruss found himself in last season, when he tore his ACL and MCL in the Rams' second preseason game against the Houston Texans. In tragic fashion, Bruss lost his entire rookie season before it even began.
Bruss told theRams.com that he had never dealt with an injury on this scale before, and looking back on his time in college, he's absolutely right. The former Wisconsin only had one period of extended absence in college, missing the final four games of his senior season with shoulder and neck injuries. Now, though, Bruss is back at full strength for training camp, in no small part due to the support around him.
"I just took the mindset of just having the best day I could possibly have every day, wouldn't look too far ahead," Bruss said. "Just kind of stayed in the present, just tried to win the day every day, and eventually that led me to here."
Bruss added that Rams physical therapist/associate athletic trainer Jon Hernandez was instrumental in his rehabilitation, both physically and mentally. Additionally, Bruss also cited fellow offensive lineman Joe Notebloom, who suffered a torn Achilles in Week 6, as a key part of his return from injury.
"Good to have another guy working towards the same goal, playing this same position," Bruss said. "It was unfortunate for him, but it was good I think for both of us to have another guy going through that."
Bruss' return has caught the attention of other Rams linemen as well, particularly Rob Havenstein. The Rams' right tackle said Bruss showed "some good things at OTAs," and added that he's looking forward to seeing what the guard can do this season.
Bruss has walked a long and winding road to get back on the field, but above all, he's grateful he has the opportunity to continue playing the game he loves.
"It was a long road back, and you realize you can't take anything for granted. It can be taken away from you really quickly," Bruss said. "So just having the opportunity to come back out here and feel good enough to play and compete again, is just an awesome feeling."
