Los Angeles Rams' Matthew Stafford Reacts to Cooper Kupp's Return in Week 5
As much as Los Angeles Rams fans would have enjoyed a win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, it wasn’t in the cards. The more talented team won. Yet, Sunday felt more like a long-term victory.
Receiver Cooper Kupp is back—and he looks good.
Kupp made his return from injured reserve in Week 5. He led the team in targets (12), receptions (eight), and yards (118) in what was his familiar dominant state.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford, who’s known to have incredible chemistry with Kupp, spoke about his battery mate after the 23-14 loss.
“It was great,” Stafford said. “I thought he played well. Proud of him, happy for him that he’s out there because I know that’s what he loves to do, to be out there playing and competing.”
However, it wasn’t all good. The bulk of Kupp’s production came in the first half. He caught just two of four targets in the final 30 minutes, and Los Angeles failed to score in the second half. The defense had a promising performance against one of the league’s toughest offenses, but the effort was fruitless.
Part of the offense’s stagnation was a result of miscommunications, particularly against man coverage. It’s almost certainly just a matter of the rust shaking off, but for now, it has a tangible impact on the offense.
“Had some decent success early on,” Stafford said. “Couple plays here or there I want back as the game went on, but loved having him back out on the field; think everyone did.”
Unsurprisingly, Kupp’s arrival helped improve the offense, rather than simply substituting for receiver Puka Nacua’s production. It is encouraging that the offense can supply both receivers with ample targets (Nacua saw 11 targets, seven receptions, 71 yards, and a score) and it promises to make Stafford’s life easier.
The Rams offense looks to take full advantage of Stafford’s trust, aggression, and proclivity for throwing absolute fastballs in the tight windows. Kupp’s return wasn’t enough on Sunday, but it bodes well for an upcoming stretch of games that could make or break Los Angeles’ season.
