Rams Offensive Line Faces Stiff Test After Impressive Week 1
Football is won and lost at the line of scrimmage ... that is usually the go-to line for coaches at all levels of football when talking about keys to victory. That often-used answer proved true in the Los Angeles Rams' 30-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks and could be again on Sunday when they face the San Francisco 49ers.
The Niners boast one of the top defenses in the league from last season, which is coming off a dominant season-opening 30-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Like in years past, a big strength of the San Francisco defense is their front seven, which includes edge rusher Nick Bosa, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, and linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.
En route to their dominant win, the Niners totaled five sacks, eight tackles for a loss, and nine quarterback hits as they held the Steelers' offense to 239 total yards.
On the contrary, coming off what some would describe as a shocking result versus the Seahawks, who were the betting favorites versus the Rams, the play at the line of scrimmage offensively helped the L.A. offense assert themselves in a big second-half.
After entering the locker room for halftime trailing 13-7 with 168 total yards of offense, the Rams not only closed the deficit, but they dominated the Seahawks, scoring 23 unanswered points and totaling 258 yards in the final two quarters of play.
All the while, the Rams' starting offensive line, which proved to be a glaring weakness last season, looked the opposite, allowing no sacks and just five total quarterback pressures in the win.
“I was really pleased with that group and I think they’d be the first to tell you that they’re excited about attacking some opportunities to improve in certain phases, but overall I thought some of the things we wanted to see that were key and critical for that game were on display,” McVay said on Monday.
