QB Stability: Rams Among Worst In NFL?

The Los Angeles Rams have had a whopping 10 quarterbacks since the start of the 2013 season.
In this story:

No quarterback? Big problems. The NFL is a quarterback-driven league and it's no secret that the best teams tend to be led by the best quarterbacks.

Cough ... Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes ... Cough.

Even better for a franchise? To have long-term stability under center. The Los Angeles Rams, however, are tied for the NFL's second-worst team in quarterback turnover rankings over the last decade, per CBS Sports.

The Rams have had a whopping 10 quarterbacks since the start of the 2013 season, tying the Houston Texans for the second-most in the NFL. To qualify for this list, a quarterback had to start at least four games in a season for a team. Only the Cleveland Browns have had more quarterbacks start, with 11 in the last 10 years.

L.A.'s starting 10 QBs have been Jared Goff (69), Matthew Stafford (28), Case Keenum (14), Nick Foles (11), Kellen Clemens (9), Austin Davis (8), Shaun Hill (8), Sam Bradford (7), Baker Mayfield (4) and John Wolford (4.)

Probably the biggest question facing the Rams in 2023 is whether Stafford will rebound after preseason elbow problems and multiple stints on the injury list that turned 2022 into a lost season.

En route to the Super Bowl in 2021, Stafford tossed 41 touchdowns and racked up 4,886 yards in his first season playing for coach Sean McVay. If he's healthy, there's no reason to believe Stafford won't be one of the more productive quarterbacks in the NFL, as he was for the bulk of his first 13 seasons.

Leading the league in quarterback stability, not surprisingly, are the Kansas City Chiefs with only two starting quarterbacks in 10 seasons (Patrick Mahomes and Alex Smith.) The reigning Super Bowl Champions are favorites to again win the Lombardi Trophy with Mahomes on a 10-year lucrative contract.

Other teams with the most stable rankings have been buoyed by long-time franchise quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers (Packers), Matthew Stafford (Lions), Eli Manning (Giants), Derek Carr (Raiders) and Philip Rivers (Chargers).

All in all, L.A.'s hopes to improve its security and dependability at quarterback with Stafford at the helm.
