Rams Sign Former Buccaneers, Texans WR Tyler Johnson
The Los Angeles Rams' receiver room got a little more crowded on Tuesday as they agreed to terms with free agent pass-catcher Tyler Johnson.
Johnson, 24, was a fifth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the the 2020 NFL Draft. He played a small role in the Buccaneers' offense, making 48 receptions for 529 yards and two touchdowns in his two seasons in Tampa Bay. He also made seven receptions for 76 yards in the postseason, including an acrobatic catch on third down to extend a crucial drive in the 2020 Divisional Round.
The Buccaneers waived Johnson just before the season on August 30, and the Houston Texans claimed him. He only suited up in two games for the Texans and took just 29 offensive snaps. Houston then released him in October, and he went back to Tampa Bay to spend the rest of the season on the Buccaneers' practice squad.
In January, the Las Vegas Raiders signed Johnson to a reserve future contract, but they waived him on May 15. He now lands with the Rams hoping to revitalize his NFL career.
During his college career with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Johnson was an electric playmaker. In 2018 and 2019, he had 164 receptions for 2,487 yards and 25 touchdowns and was a first-team All-Big Ten selection both seasons. He holds the program records for receiving yards (3,305) and touchdowns (33) and is second in receptions (213).
Now, Johnson hopes to regain the form he had in college while playing in the City of Angels.
