Rams Roster Losses 'Inevitable,' Says Coach Sean McVay
"Change'' in the NFL is, coach Sean McVay says, "inevitable.''
But the challenge for the Los Angeles Rams is to make "inevitable changes'' that don't produce negative results.
Said McVay of roster alterations: “It’s something that you got to have the necessary agility, but it is something that we knew was inevitable, and ‘How do we really figure out how to have a more disciplined approach?’ is the way that you look at it.”
"Disciplined,'' because there is a piper to be paid, cap-wise, for the efforts put in to building the Super Bowl team of a year ago.
To LA management, though, that doesn't mean the 2023 season will "inevitably'' be a failure. They talk of a "remodel,'' and core stars like Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp remain in place. But this year's Rams will likely skew young; a rookie, a second-year guy, a unheralded street free agent? They'll get chances at roster spots.
And the Rams will get chances to hit on prospects.
Said McVay: “We’ve always figured out different avenues to be able to acquire players or try to be able to create the most competitive roster that we possibly can ... I think it’s about reassessing, making sure that we do a great job with the players that we do onboard.”
The upcoming 2023 NFL Draft offers that "onboard'' opportunity. The Rams do not own a first-round pick, but they do have a whopping 11 selections overall. Hit on some of those, and maybe, given the strengths of the Los Angeles organization as a whole, a return to prominence will also be "inevitable.''
