Rams' Sean McVay Explains Decision to Waive 2022 Third-Round Pick
Looking to bolster the offensive line that they have to protect 35-year-old quarterback Matthew Stafford, coach Sean McVay says that the Los Angeles Rams entered Training Camp without any preconceived notions.
And as such, they will enter the regular season without offensive guard Logan Bruss, who was waived by the Rams Wednesday despite being a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, as the team cut its roster down to 53 players.
“Really, we just had an open mind with competition at every single spot and we felt like the 10 guys that we kept did a good job of earning those spots," McVay said.
While Bruss didn't make the 53-man roster, McVay did add that the hope is that he will clear waivers and be able to return to the Rams on their practice squad.
"Obviously, with (OL) Kevin Dotson being a late add he has a body of work and a resume and Logan is somebody that we still want to be able to continue to work with," McVay continued. "Hopefully we'll be able to get him back on the practice squad, but it was really just as simple as keeping an open mind and some of those other guys we felt like earned their spots.”
The 6-foot-5, 309-pound guard was a Second-Team All-Big 10 selection in 2021, his final collegiate season at Wisconsin. Unfortunately for Bruss, he missed the entirety of what would have been his rookie season after he tore both the ACL and MCL in his left knee in a preseason matchup with the Houston Texans. Just from a human perspective, you have to hope that a healthy Bruss gets a chance to chase his NFL dream somewhere, whether it's with the Rams or another team.
Los Angeles believes that the addition of left guard Steve Avila in the second round of the NFL Draft will help them to keep Stafford on the field more consistently this season after two stints in concussion protocol limited the veteran to just nine games in 2022.
