PFF Coach Rankings: Rams Sean McVay Still Among NFL's Best?

Even after suffering his first losing season as coach of the Los Angeles Rams, Sean McVay still comes in near the top of PFF's coach rankings
In this story:

Sean McVay has taken the league by storm since he became coach of the Los Angeles Rams in 2017, but 2022 marked the first major down point in his career.

After winning the Super Bowl just months earlier, McVay's Rams stumbled to a 5-12 finish, marking his first losing season. It's difficult to place much of the blame on McVay, as the Rams dealt with brutal injuries among other hardships. However, the end result still doesn't look great on his record.

That said, one bad season does not define a coach's career, especially one as accomplished as McVay. He is still widely seen as one of the best coaches in the league, earning the No. 6 spot on PFF's ranking of the top 10 coaches in the game.

"It might be tough to look at the current state of the Rams’ franchise and think McVay should be in this spot over a handful of other worthy coaches, but this is still Sean McVay," PFF writes. "In his first two seasons as a head coach, he came into the spotlight and turned a Jared Goff-led offense into a group that ranked in the top 10 in rushing, passing and overall expected points added per play.

"Los Angeles lost the Super Bowl in 2018 but won its second crack at it in 2021. It’s been an incredibly impressive six seasons for McVay as a head coach."

For how much McVay has done over his career, it's only right that he gets the benefit of the doubt. Not only does McVay have an impressive résumé that includes a Super Bowl title, but he has also changed the NFL as a whole. His success has inspired other teams to look for younger options, and he has already produced three current coaches from his coaching tree.

If the Rams can bounce back from a down season, then perhaps McVay could climb even higher on this list next year.
