Los Angeles Rams 'Expected' to Sign Former Backup Quarterback John Wolford
The Los Angeles Rams have moved to bring in another quarterback, as Matthew Stafford could be set for a stint on the sideline following Sunday's 43-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Per a report from The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Rams are "expected" to bring back a familiar face in current Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad signal-caller John Wolford.
The news comes after Rams coach Sean McVay revealed on Monday that Stafford suffered a sprained UCL in his right thumb versus the Cowboys, which has him "day-to-day" regarding availability.
Before being pulled from Sunday's loss in the second half, Stafford completed 13 of his 22 passes for 162 yards with a touchdown and an interception. In his absence, backup Brett Rypien finished the game, completing five of his 10 passes for 42 yards.
But, with the availability of Stafford uncertain and Rypien being the only other active quarterback on the roster, as rookie fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett is still away from the team due to undisclosed reasons, the Rams had to make a move.
That move was the signing of Wolford, who was with the Rams just last season after joining them as a free agent in April of 2019. During his first stint with the Rams, Wolford served as the backup quarterback to Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford and even made four starts over those three seasons.
The 28-year-old started in three games last season for the Rams as Stafford dealt with multiple injuries, where he completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 390 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions before Baker Mayfield replaced him to finish the year.
The Rams will look to rebound from the blowout loss with a win against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
