Rams Sign Ex Steelers, Niners Starting CB Ahkello Witherspoon
The Los Angeles Rams entered the offseason looking to improve a secondary that many believed was one of the worst in the NFL. After all, they had already lost big names such as Jalen Ramsey, Taylor Rapp, and Nick Scott.
And on Thursday, they did just that, singing former Steelers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon per reports from Jordan Schultz.
Witherspoon, 28, was originally a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL Draft.
In three years with the 49ers, Witherspoon was a key factor in a solid defense, playing in 60 games, starting 40 of those games, and making four interceptions, with 117 tackles, and 24 pass deflections.
The Pittsburgh Steelers then traded with the 49ers for Witherspoon in 2021.
And when Witherspoon was healthy, he was just as productive, starting seven of 13 games, with four interceptions, 11 pass deflections, and 35 tackles.
Unfortunately, a lingering hamstring injury sidelined him for most of the season, and his time with the Steelers ended with one year left on his deal.
Now, Witherspoon will enter a cornerback room that features the young pairing of Derion Kendrick (22) and Cobie Durant (25), where he will hope to provide veteran leadership and production in the upcoming season.
