Rams BREAKING: Sony Michel Retires Suddenly
Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel has decided to retire, coach Sean McVay revealed in an appearance on NFL Network Saturday evening.
It's a rather shocking development from the 28-year-old, who had been slated to be second on Los Angeles' running back depth chart behind Cam Akers. It's not immediately clear what lead to this decision from Akers.
After a decorated collegiate career at Georgia, Michel was selected by the New England Patriots with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons playing for Bill Belichick and the Patriots, including helping New England to defeat the Rams in Super Bowl LIII to cap off his rookie season.
The Rams would later acquire Michel in an August 2021 trade that sent fifth and sixth-round picks back the Patriots. He rushed for 845 yards in 2021, with the Rams ultimately defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.
Following a 2022 that saw him appear in 10 games for the Los Angeles Chargers, Michel had inked a one-year, $1.08 million deal to return to the Rams for the 2023 season. Instead, he's elected to walk away from the sport.
If this is indeed it for Michel, he rushed for 3,243 yards on 4.2 yards per carry in parts of five NFL seasons. Despite such a short career, Michel will always have two Super Bowl rings on his resume.
