Rams Claim Ex Bears LB; Special-Teams Help?
There's a new linebacker in the City of Angels as the Los Angeles Rams claimed second-year player Sterling Weatherford on waivers, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Weatherford signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent last year, although he was waived during the final round of roster cuts. The Chicago Bears claimed him on waivers, where he proceeded to play 14 games for them entirely as a special teams player. He recorded four total tackles on the season.
In college, Weatherford appeared in 38 games over four seasons at Miami (Ohio). In that time, he recorded 209 total tackles, 19 passes defended, four interceptions, three sacks and two forced fumbles. He was a second-team All-MAC selection as a senior in 2021.
After the Bears claimed Weatherford on waivers, then-Colts general manager Chris Ballard said losing him was a "hard one," as the team likely wanted to sign him to the practice squad. If the Colts wanted to keep him, they clearly must've seen some potential in him.
Now, it's up to the Rams to figure out how to unlock that potential.
