Rams' Stetson Bennett Made 'Boneheaded Plays' in Debut

Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett was very candid in critiquing his preseason debut.
In this story:

Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett had a perfect preseason game from a coach's perspective Saturday against the Chargers. He made enough plays to intrigue you but clearly has some areas to clean up.

And the fourth-round pick seemed aware of that at the postgame podium after a 34-17 preseason loss.

“I thought it was alright, I thought there were some boneheaded plays that I made," Bennett said. "I thought there were some good plays that I made. I thought we bounced back a few times from some lost-yardage plays... So I've got to clean that up a little bit, but I thought it was alright. It's hard to say without watching the tape.”

Bennett completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 191 yards and a touchdown in his first preseason action but did throw two passes that very easily could have been intercepted. Again, Bennett had some very nice moments, but his performance was probably more of a mixed bag than looking at the box score would lead you to believe.

The former Georgia Bulldogs standout figures to get some more extended runway in the preseason, as the Rams attempt to keep starting quarterback Matthew Stafford healthy. Los Angeles still had matchups with the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos remaining on their preseason slate.

Ideally, Bennett will have something of a redshirt rookie season, sitting behind another former Georgia star in Stafford and veteran Brett Rypien. Then again, Stafford is 35 and was limited to just nine games a season ago.

If he misses any extended period of time this season, you would have to think McVay will want to get a look at what he has in Bennett. So cleaning up any mistakes that Bennett made in his first preseason game is crucial, because, at some point in 2023, he may be called upon in a game that counts.
