NFL Legend Steve Young Says Rams Are 'Place To Be' For Jets QB Zach Wilson
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford still has some gas left in the tank, but with him about to turn 36 and dealing with injuries over the past couple of seasons, many expect the team to go pick up another signal-caller this offseason.
Whether that other quarterback is Stafford's backup, heir or both is another question, but perhaps the man for the job could be a reclamation project of sorts.
Speaking on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young believes the Rams would be the perfect team for New York Jets signal-caller Zach Wilson to revive his career with.
“To me, the place he needs to be is in LA. Go with Sean McVay. Follow (Matthew) Stafford and just sit there and watch the magic and then see if you can pick it up,” Young said, per Deseret News. “If you can, then you can be one of the best because you have the talent for it. But he has to get to one of those spots.”
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson definitely has talent, but due to a combination of factors in and out of his control, his time with the Jets has not gone well to say the least. Through three seasons in the Big Apple, the BYU product completed just 57 percent of his passes for 6,293 yards with 23 touchdowns to 25 interceptions while being benched on multiple occasions.
Even with Wilson's struggles, Young, the former San Francisco 49ers star and a fellow BYU product, believes that Wilson can still find NFL success with the right support in place.
“There’s these innovative minds taking advantage of the rule changes,” Young said. “(Wilson) needs to get to one of those spots. He needs to join forces (with them). If we’re going to see anything out of Zach Wilson into the future, he needs to get away from these places that are not quarterback friendly.”
Ironically, Young's idea of Wilson taking a backup role to "watch the magic" was what the Jets planned to do this season after acquiring Aaron Rodgers. However, that plan and New York's season went up in flames when Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles just four plays into his Jets career.
To Young's credit, McVay's Rams do have a history of reforming quarterbacks. Late last season, the Rams claimed Baker Mayfield off waivers and gave him a brief chance to show his skills. He then parlayed that opportunity to earn a starting job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whom he had a career year with this season.

The Rams also gave Carson Wentz another chance this season, and while he only played one game while starters were resting, he did look relatively solid in that game.
If Young's intuition is right, then Wilson could be the next quarterback McVay works his magic on.
