Tutu Atwell 'Super-Smart!’ Rams Coach Sean McVay Reacts

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay opens up about "confident" third-year receiver Tutu Atwell
In this story:

Los Angeles Rams receiver Tutu Atwell's 16.6 yards per reception last season would've been ranked as the fifth-most at the position, but his small sample size of 18 receptions in 13 games (four starts) eliminated him from being eligible for the list.

Nevertheless, according to the Rams' unofficial depth chart, Atwell is expected to be a starting receiver alongside Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson. Heading into his third season, Atwell has shown a lot of improvement throughout training camp and has been considered the "master of the offense" by quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Rams coach Sean McVay is the latest member of the organization to hop on the Tutu train.

“He's made a lot of plays and that's been consistent from the spring," McVay said. "It's one day, but what I love about Tutu is the work that he's put in is paying off. He's super-smart. He can play all over the formation in our offense. I think he's playing physical at the catch-point too."

McVay broke down a catch that Atwell made in yesterday's practice that proves his claims.

"He made a nice physical contested play on an outbreak off of a play action where he was kind of getting tugged," McVay said. "(The defense) got the flag and then he found a way to still come down with it, so playing big."

McVay explained that Atwell's big plays throughout training camp has given the receiver a lot of "earned confidence."

Atwell's likely promotion to a starting role should easily make him eligible for the yards-per-catch leaderboard. The 23-year-old's massive improvements this offseason will hopefully lead him toward the top of it.
