WATCH: Rams Rookie Puka Nacua Makes Leaping Catch Over Defender
Los Angeles Rams rookie receiver Puka Nacua has made his mark in his first offseason with the team.
A fifth-round pick out of BYU, Nacua has quickly caught the Rams' attention through the team's offseason programs. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said the Rams' coachers are "really, really pleased" with Nacua, and that's just a recent example. While it remains to be seen how well he performs on the field of play, a strong first impression has the Rams believing he could become a key contributor.
To see just what Nacua can do, look no further than a highlight-reel catch he made during Sunday's practice. With his defender draping him, Nacua went up and over for the leaping grab and brought down the pass from quarterback Matthew Stafford.
After beginning his college career at Washington but rarely seeing the field in two seasons, Nacua transferred to BYU in 2021 and became the team's top receiver. In two seasons with the Cougars, the 6-1, 205-pound receiver racked up 1,430 yards and 11 touchdowns on 91 receptions.
Nacua's strong showing at practice couldn't have come at a better time for the Rams. With star receiver Cooper Kupp suffering an injury in practice last week, other receivers are getting a more extensive look until he returns. Nacua obviously isn't Kupp, who had one of the best seasons by a receiver ever in 2021, but the fact that someone is stepping up is encouraging.
With the Rams kicking off their preseason slate against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday, Nacua will get a taste of full-speed NFL action for the first time. The Rams will be looking to see if his strong performance in practice can translate to the field of play.
