Sean McVay Opens Up On Controversial Ending Against 49ers

The Los Angeles Rams upset a lot of bettors with a meaningless field goal at the end of the game.

The Los Angeles Rams lost their Week 2 Sunday matchup against the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 30-23, but it was the last three points that upset many.

With the game seemingly out of hand in the fourth quarter and the Rams trailing by 10 points, head coach Sean McVay sent out the kicking unit with four seconds remaining in the game. The kick was good, which made the score 30-23 instead of 30-20 to end the game but the kick also played a major factor in the lives of gamblers everywhere.

Little did McVay know or care about, by going for and making the field goal, the Rams ended up covering the 7.5-point total. He told the media he learned about the frustration after the game.

“Apparently, Artis (Twyman) told me there’s a lot of people in Vegas pissed off about that decision. I clearly was not aware of that stuff,” McVay said.

When discussing the motivation behind the kick, McVay revealed that the Rams had plans to make a field goal and then push for a comeback if time allowed.

“The initial goal was to try to get a two-for-one to where you end up getting into field goal range a little bit earlier with some of the play selections that we had and then ultimately be able to try to have an onside kick to then be able to go try to compete to tie or win the game.”

With all of the gambling scandals in football, it is nearly impossible that McVay purposely did that. However, he may get a kick out of the aftermath of the field goal.
