Rams Backup QB Signing: Did Carson Wentz Already Get a 'No'?
Hey, it seems geographically sensible. There is an available quarterback with a (former) blue-chip pedigree who is looking for work ... and he just happens to be doing his offseason training in Southern California - in Los Angeles Rams country.
Meanwhile, up until about a minute ago, the only QB on the Rams roster was Matthew Stafford. So ... Hey, Carson Wentz? Wanna swing over for a visit?
ESPN is reporting that Wentz, who way back in 2017 was a Pro Bowler, is in L.A. working out. The Jeremy Fowler note also mentions that Wentz is "willing'' to be either a starter or a backup for his next team, a remark that comes across as if Fowler is laboring to be excessively polite to the fallen star.
Nobody is interested in Wentz as a starter, obviously. But what about as a Rams helper? That possibility apparently disappeared when the Rams opted to take Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of the recent NFL Draft.
Is the smallish overachiever Stetson Bennett inherently "more talented'' than Wentz? Surely not.
OK, but then, a few days ago, the Rams added one more passer inBrett Rypien to the QB room. Rypien is best-known (and we use the term "best-known'' loosely) for backing up Russell Wilson last year with the Denver Broncos.
Is the journeyman-at-best Rypien "more talented'' than Wentz? Surely not.
The league's confidence in Wentz - once considered to be "the answer'' in Philly then in Indy then in Washington - has faded. So, we bet has Wentz' confidence in himself.
General manager Les Snead recently suggested the Rams master plan on The Rich Eisen Show, saying, "We did think that it could be very beneficial if we could find a young quarterback to (draft and) develop as a backup. ... The vision was, hey, let’s try to find the best backup QB available, and if we can do that in the draft, that’s even more of a benefit to us. If not, we would’ve pivoted into a different direction.”
But no "pivot'' in L.A. And no Wentz in L.A., either ... even though he is physically in L.A.
