McVay Reveals Impact Bobby Wagner Had on Rams Linebacker Ernest Jones' Development
The Los Angeles Rams entered the 2023 season with arguably the worst on-paper defense in the sport. Aside from superstar defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the Los Angeles defense was anonymous to most of the football-watching populace.
With two regular season games left to play, the Rams (8-7) have turned that anonymity into something respectable—a unit ranked 18th in expected points added per play and 11th in success rate.
That doesn’t happen without legitimate development from key contributors. Few have taken as sizable a jump as linebacker Ernest Jones IV.
Now, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and linebackers coach Chris Shula both deserve praise for his growth. The former should have a chance to interview for a handful of head coaching jobs this winter, and Shula may be in line for a promotion if Morris re-joins the ranks of lead men in the NFL. However, former Los Angeles linebacker—and currently Seattle Seahawk—Bobby Wagner had as much, if not more, to do with it.
Rams head coach Sean McVay spoke about the Canton-bound linebacker’s impact.
“I know Bobby had a tremendous influence just watching his everyday approach and his preparation, but Ernest is extremely conscientious,” McVay said. “I think one of his things is he's got a great concept trigger. He really has a good understanding of what to expect and anticipate. And really, he and Chris Shula have such a cool relationship in terms of their weekly rhythm. It's why he's got the dot.”
As the main communicator on defense, Jones has excelled. He’s Pro Football Focus’ second-highest-graded defensive player for Los Angeles, sporting an 81.5 grade. By their charting, he’s also the team's leading tackler, with 83—20 ahead of the next-highest Rams defender.
“He’s been outstanding, but I thought it was a great example for him to be able to have Bobby to see what that really looks like,” McVay said. “You guys have heard me talk about it, there's nothing more powerful than seeing and really somebody modeling the way.
“And obviously, we know what a pro's pro Bobby is but I think Ernest has really done a great job of continuing to take his game in the right direction, and then just his overall charisma and presence and the way that he elevates people.”
Sean McVay 'Loves' LB Ernest Jones; Extension Coming?
Jones’ two highest-graded games of the season (via PFF) have come in back-to-back weeks, just as Los Angeles has ascended into a legitimate playoff team. He’s making an impact in coverage, against the run, and even the occasional pressure as well, finding a sack in three consecutive games.
His development has become apparent in real time, fitting nicely with the Rams’ path to the playoffs. With a winnable game on Sunday against the New York Giants, Los Angeles can nearly cement itself as a Wild Card team in the NFC playoff picture.
Having beaten Seattle twice this season and hosting the linebacker for a year between stints with the Seahawks, the Rams have their rival to thank for an inside linebacker who’s proven pivotal to their playoff push.
