Baltimore Ravens Alternate Uniforms Disrespected In Recent List
Uniforms might be more harshly judged in the modern NFL than in previous generations.
It's all about the money. Teams sign deals with apparel companies and those outlets are tasked with designing a uniform that is not only pleasing to the eyes, but that relates to the team, the fanbase and the city.
In a recent list by Yardbarker, the Baltimore Ravens' all black alternate duds were ranked in the bottom half of the league at No. 36 out of 41. Why 41 you ask? The league has only 32 teams. Some teams (such as the Ravens) have two sets of alternates on the confusing list.
"The NFL is in a better place, uniform-wise than it was during the Aughts and into the early 2010s. But the league does over-monochrome itself at times. The Ravens can at least get away with their all-black look, seeing as it has been a primary color for the team since its 1996 metamorphosis. Still, this is a bit much. And, post-Ed Reed and Ray Lewis, it does not evoke as much intimidation."
But the all purple uniforms with gold numbers (my personal favorite) fared a little better at No. 22.
"One of just two teams capable of giving us a purple onslaught, the Ravens bounce back when they wear these. Baltimore's second NFL franchise has never offered the masses a good standard uniform, but accentuating gold on this alternate look places the squad in a better light. It is too bad these are limited to once-a-year status."
The worst on the list? The all-pewter Tampa Bay Buccaneers' look.
The best on the list? The creamsicle throwback Tampa Bay Buccaneers unis.
It's surely a confusing day in Tampa Bay.
