Ravens DE Free Agent Target Dawuane Smoot Signs With Jaguars
The Baltimore Ravens are hoping to begin the 2023 season with one of the best rosters they've had in recent memory. That includes the recently re-signed franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson and his new platoon of receivers, Nelson Agholor, Odell Beckham Jr. and fresh draftee Zay Flowers. Add back J.K. Dobbins to that mix and there is certainly reason for excitement in Charm City.
Excitement increased with reports that veteran defensive end/linebacker Dawuane Smoot was scheduled to visit the Ravens early next week per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Rapoport said in his social media report that "Smoot tore his Achilles late last season, but is doing well in his rehab and prepping to get back on the field. Baltimore is a strong option."
But now that excitement turns to disappointment for some as Smoot has agreed to terms with his old team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The deal, which is worth a max value of $6.25M and comes with $3.25M in guarantees, keeps Smoot in Jacksonville after he spent the offseason as a free-agent. Smoot was set to visit with the Baltimore Ravens, but the Jaguars and Smoot's representatives were able to get a deal done before Smoot set foot in the Ravens' facilities.
Smoot, who turned 28 in March, has registered at least five sacks in each of the last four seasons with the Jaguars, and most likely would've been a top free agent target in the offseason had it not been for his injury in Week 16.
