Chiefs win Super Bowl: Ravens Blueprint?
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday for their second Super Bowl win in the last four seasons.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes became the first person to win league MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season since 1999 (Kurt Warner) as he orchestrated the game-winning drive near the end of regulation.
And that leaves Baltimore Ravens fans wondering, "why not us?"
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and it's no different in the NFL. When a team becomes successful, others are quick to imitate what works.
The Ravens are already a step ahead of some teams at the quarterback position. Whether or not that remains the case is a bit uncertain as Lamar Jackson is currently entering free agency and the two sides seem far apart.
What about other positions?
The Chiefs' best receiver is tight end Travis Kelce, and again the Ravens are in good shape there with Mark Andrews.
Both are pass-catching specialists who oftentimes create matchup issues with opposing defenses.
And even at head coach, the two franchises are similar. Andy Reid just beat his former team for his second championship, and John Harbaugh also has a Super Bowl win to his resume.
But of course, there are striking differences.
The Chiefs have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, a place where the Ravens need to improve. And the Chiefs' championship-level defense is lightyears ahead of Baltimore's.
But the blueprint is there for the Ravens, and at least some of the pieces are in place.
The first order of business? Figuring out a way to keep Jackson. Because quarterback is the hardest position to get right for any NFL team. And the Ravens could have that locked down with a one-time league MVP.
