Lamar Jackson Contract Details Remain a Mystery
It's been almost a full week since the Baltimore Ravens announced that they and quarterback Lamar Jackson had agreed to terms for a new five-year contract. But for some reason, the full details of that deal have yet to be reported.
We were given a few basic details of the deal, but the most important parts of that agreement remain under wraps.
The NFL Players Association hasn't published anything about the new contract, and per PFT, we don't even know if they have the details themselves. As a matter of fact, the NFLPA wasn't even involved in the talks that brought about the deal in the first place.
Early on in the process, the player's union had been helping Jackson, who still does not have an NFLPA-certified agent.
And we know the league doesn't have the contract yet, which means the Ravens have yet to submit it to them. What gives?
This is not unprecedented, as the Jalen Hurts deal took a full week between the announcement and filing, but that's because the player wasn't in town to sign the deal. No one knows if that's the case with Jackson.
Why does anyone care? Because other quarterbacks can use this information for their next deal. The Chargers' Justin Herbert and the Bengals' Joe Burrow are both in line for big paydays, and the Jackson deal could be used as a baseline ... if we ever find out the specifics.
Most importantly, the signing bonus, full guarantee at signing, conversion of injury guarantee to full guarantee after one season, and three-year cash flow.
That last category is of particular interest since it will surely be more than the low cash flow paid to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which means Mahomes could fall to No. 11 among veteran QBs. Then he would call even further after Herbert and Burrow signed their deals.
