'Extreme Makeover!' Ravens New Offense Top 10 NFL Storyline to Watch
On paper, the Baltimore Ravens offense has talent everywhere you look. It is a loaded group with Lamar Jackson orchestrating it and weapons in Odell Beckham Jr., Zay Flowers, Mark Andrews, Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, and free agent signing Nelson Agholor who is already turning heads at OTA's.
But that counts for little if the unit doesn't gel in Todd Monken's new offensive scheme. After being a predominantly run-first offense under Greg Roman, now with Monken's more vertical offense, things will be different.
NFL.com's Judy Battista details how a fascination with how the Ravens offense acclimates together makes it a must-watch storyline this offseason.
"The Ravens have gone all in on surrounding Lamar Jackson with the best wide receiving group he's had in the NFL," Battista writes. "Let's see how Odell Beckham Jr. looks now that he appears to be fully recovered from his second knee surgery. Let's see what first-round draft pick Zay Flowers does. And Nelson Agholor. And let's see what new offensive coordinator Todd Monken has in mind for this offense, which was 28th in passing last season.
"During OTAs, Jackson said he was loving Monken's offense. This is expected to be one of the most extreme makeovers in the NFL -- and, given the contract investment in Jackson, one that has some of the highest expectations attached to it."
With the Ravens looking to be only one of a handful of teams in the Super Bowl window in the AFC, along with the Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, and the Miami Dolphins, things will need to gel reasonably quickly.
Under Jackson last season, the Ravens were 8-4 and were in first place in the division. Of course, we know what happened once Lamar went down with injury. But if he can stay healthy and develop chemistry with his new, high-octane offense, Baltimore could be a serious player come the postseason.
However, to do that, it starts on the practice field - hence why watching how the new offense under Monken develops is a top storyline this NFL offseason.
