Ravens to Play More Up-Tempo With New Offense

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens often had trouble last season getting the ball snapped before the play clock expired.

They don't expect to have that kind of challenge with new offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who plans to play at a faster pace.

"I think also being no-huddle, some tempo [and] what that provides because [in the college game] we were all no-huddle," Monken said. "It’s a little bit different then because of the dynamics of a signal system, and then the [radio communication] green dot to the quarterback. So, you have to work through some of that. That will take some working through, but it’s a speed bump, not a hurdle.”

The Ravens had seven delay-of-game penalties in 2022, tied for third-worst in the league.

Some of the challenges stemmed from former offensive coordinator Greg Roman not getting the plays relayed to quarterback Lamar Jackson in a timely manner.

Jackson became increasingly agitated with the process, and in Week 11, he punted the ball in frustration against the Carolina Panthers.

It's an area coach John Harbaugh addressed this offseason. He is confident Mnken can fix the problem.

"Different kinds of tempos, huddle, no-huddle, real fast, controlled tempo, call plays at the line, don’t call plays at the line … These are all things that you talk about [and] things that he brings to the table that he’s really very versatile with," Harbaugh said. "That’s going to be very valuable for us. So, that’s part of it. The relationship part of it was really good too. You talk to different people that have been around Todd – players especially, but also coaches – he just has a great way with players."
