NFL Mock Draft: Ravens Select Justin Madubuike Replacement?

The future of Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Justin Madubuike is uncertain given his contract status, and in their latest mock draft, NFL.com has the franchise taking a star pass rusher.
In this story:

Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Justin Madubuike was one of the stars of Mike Macdonald's league-best unit this season as he had a career-best year.

Madubuike tormented opposing offenses for fun and such was his season as he led the Ravens in sacks (13.0), quarterback hits (33), and tackles for loss (12), he is in line for a monster payday as an impending free agent.

While the franchise tag is thought to be an option for Baltimore, ideally securing Madubuike to a long-term deal is the priority - however, it's anything but a certainty.

As such, NFL.com has the Ravens taking an insurance policy in Illinois defensive star Jer'Zhan Newton.

"The Ravens likely will do everything in their power to bring back free agent-to-be Justin Madubuike, but if they can't (or are forced to franchise tag him), Newton could be an intriguing addition to the defensive line, assuming they view him as a fit with their odd front," NFL.com writes. "He's a skilled rusher whose superpower is his ability to disrupt blocking schemes."

With Newton's ability to play all across the defensive line, his ability to be a consistent disruptor is something that could be of interest to the Ravens.

Newton's superb season consisted of totaling eight sacks, 28 hurries, and 43 total pressures led him to be named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

Ravens Free Agency Decision: Franchise Tag DT Justin Madubuike?

Given that the Ravens have a couple of defensive stars out of contract, highlighted by Madubuike and Jadeveon Clowney, drafting their potential replacement could be the smart move and Newton certainly seems to fit the bill.

Of course, the Ravens would like to see Madubuike return given the soar in production this season, but if for some reason they can't, then perhaps selecting one of the best defensive linemen in the upcoming draft is a nice compromise.
