Ravens Decline Fifth-Year Option on LB Patrick Queen
The Baltimore Ravens already spent big at linebacker having recently signed Roquan Smith to a five-year, $100 million deal. Now, after using a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to take Clemson linebacker Trenton Simpson, they've spent big again in terms of capital.
And all of that leads to a natural question about the commitment - or maybe lack thereof - to another linebacker standout in Patrick Queen. The Ravens may have already made up their minds about the future of Queen in Baltimore.
The Ravens were faced with a Monday, May 1 deadline for a decision as to whether to exercise the fifth-year option on Queen, an arrangement that would keep him under contract through 2024 with a price tag of about $13 million. And now, reports are they have declined that option.
With Simpson in the fold and with Roquan locked up for the long-term ... yes, it will make sense for the Ravens to field trade calls for Queen, who had 117 total tackles, six pass breakups, five sacks and two fumble recoveries for the Ravens in 2022.
The former LSU Tiger finished third in Defensive Rookie of the Year back in 2020, finishing behind winner Chase Young and Jeremy Chinn. And now Queen enters a contract year in 2023 where he will try and earn his first big contract since joining the league.
