BREAKING: Ravens Cut Melvin Gordon
Back in late July, former Chargers, Broncos and Chiefs running back Melvin Gordon signed with the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year, $3.1 million deal meant to be an insurance policy against potential injuries to other backs.
And now, the Gordon era in Baltimore comes to an abrupt end as he was a cut-down casualty as the Ravens reduced the roster to 53 for the Tuesday deadline.
The Baltimore Ravens' running back situation has hardly been ideal the past couple of seasons. In 2021, the Ravens had high expectations for J.K. Dobbins before he suffered a knee injury in a preseason game against Washington.
To compound the situation, fellow running backs Gus Edwards and Justice Hill also suffered season-ending injuries before the start of the season.
Last season, Dobbins missed five games while both Edwards and Hill dealt with injuries as well. Dobbins enters training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, with no definite timetable to return per coach John Harbaugh, who described the situation as not having “a simple answer.”
“Melvin is a pro,” Harbaugh said in his press conference announcing the signing of Gordon. “I had a chance to get to know him up close. We’ve known him as a defense; now we get to see him as a teammate. He’s very excited to be here; he’s very excited to make a statement about where he’s at in his career, for sure.
Whether or not Gordon will return is uncertain. He was already a bargain at $3.1 million this year, but with a crowded running backs room, there's very little chance he would see much playing time.
