Ex Baltimore Ravens TE Shannon Sharpe Verbally Sacks Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson
Former Baltimore Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe has already blitzed new Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson.
Sharpe took exception to Wilson's previous words about evolving the game as a black quarterback, without giving credit to those who came before him.
"For me to be able to go to back-to-back Super Bowls, and win one of them, I think opened up a lot of doors,” Wilson said in an interview with ESSENCE. "Now you see guys like Patrick Mahomes who won it; it’s really just us so far, but there’s more to come.” The emergence of quarterbacks like Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson and C.J. Stroud, to name a few, is indicative of a new era in football and a glimpse into what the sport is trending toward."
Sharpe rightfully responded by asking about players who played before Wilson that actually set the tone for black quarterbacks to this day - namely, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington quarterback Doug Williams.
"So what role did Doug Williams play? The first African-American quarterback to actually get to and win the Super Bowl and win MVP," Sharpe said to his co-host Chad Johnson. "So what about Shack Harris? What about Joe Gilliam? So what did Marlin Briscoe did? Jack Harry? Steve McNair? They opened no doors? Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick? It was you?"
Wilson tried to backtrack and clarify, but for Sharpe it's too little too late. And it prompted Sharpe to expand his attack to the whole Steelers organization - something odd for a kid who grew up a Steelers fan.
"I wish him the best in Pittsburgh, except when they play the Ravens, and if they play the Broncos," Sharpe said on the Nightcap Podcast. "I want the Ravens to beat the brakes off of them twice. And if they play the Broncos, I want the Broncos to win."
Well, Shannon, RavenCountry.com can tell you the Steelers WILL play the Broncos this season, and of course the Ravens twice as division opponents.
So there will be at least three games Sharpe will be playing close attention to with regard to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.
