Todd Monken Wants Baltimore Ravens’ 'Mojo Back!' vs. Browns
One of the most fascinating storylines throughout the offseason was going to be how Todd Monken's Baltimore Ravens' offense would look. With Greg Roman and his run-heavy offense out and Monken's more vertical passing game taking over, the thought was Baltimore was going to be explosive.
Well, through the first three games they have stuttered and spluttered along while showing flashes of what they can produce (Bengals game in a 27-24 win), and then a week later, against the Indianapolis Colts, look rather clunky in the 22-19 overtime loss.
For Monken, it is only early in the season and he isn't overreacting.
"You don't want to overreact [Colts loss], but you don't want to just scrub it under the rug," Monken said. "It was just a week ago we went to the Bengals and played really well and functioned at a really high level on the road."
The biggest thing for the offense is to find a level of consistency throughout the year, and that may be difficult in the early stages of the season as the scheme and concepts get installed, but as time goes by, Baltimore would hope that they become more consistent on offense.
Monken knows that the offense can be who they know they can be, but getting it on a weekly basis has thus far proven challenging.
Part of that is down to, as Lamar Jackson stated, players still getting to know each other, while another reason is that simply learning a new system takes time. What is important is picking up wins along the way.
Baltimore has done that as it sits at 2-1 so it's not panic stations...yet.
For Monken, he knows the potential of his offense, but the challenge is getting it produced on the field.
"We have it in us," Monken said. "How do we carry that week to week? How do we install it, gameplan it the right way so our guys understand what to expect? Two weeks in a row we've taken the opening drive and gone down and scored. We just never got that mojo back."
The Ravens get another chance to improve offensively when they travel to face the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in what looms as a critical division game.
This time, if they score on the opening drive, it is all about keeping that mojo and putting points on the board.
Baltimore has struggled to put teams away so far in the season, and what better way to fix that than to ruin the Browns day in their stadium?
