Could Ravens Win Trigger Andy Reid Retirement - and Belichick to Chiefs?
We have been unwavering in our skepticism about Bill Belichick being a “hot candidate” in this coaching cycle, and so far we’ve been right about the deposed czar of New England.
But the national media rumors are not going away, with some mentioning a “mystery team” in his immediate future.
Could that team be the Kansas City Chiefs, set to play at the Baltimore Ravens in Sunday’s AFC title game?
But wait - don’t the Chiefs already have a stellar coach in Andy Reid?
Enter the gossip-mongers, in this case FOX Sports shock jock Craig Carton, who is boldly predicting that Belichick will become the next head coach of the Chiefs.
Carton - who says everything “boldly,” no matter how nonsensical - thinks Reid will retire after this season is over. … and then the door would be open for Belichick to make a move.
"I think Bill Belichick will be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs next year," Carton said. "I think that's where he goes after Andy Reid retires after this year, which apparently there's some smoke around him retiring."
There is indeed “smoke,” but it mostly comes from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, who so far this offseason is oh-fer when it comes to his Belichick “reporting.”
John Harbaugh Prepares For Conference Title Battle Against 'Old Friend' Andy Reid
"I think there is reason to believe the Chiefs have the possibility (of retirement) on their radar screen. We will find out when the season ends," Florio said. “A lot of times, a guy keeps his mouth shut until it is all said and done - he doesn't want to be the story, he doesn't want to be the focal point, he doesn't want it to be the issue."
The leap from that Reid idea to the Belichick idea seems a long one. Do the Chiefs want to give full power to King Belichick? Why would they change their organizational structure, given their Super Bowl pedigree?
The smartest thing written about Belichick by the national media here: “We will find out after the season ends.”
