Commanders ‘May Make a Run’ at Ravens QB Lamar Jackson?

Despite ruling themselves out on pursuing Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Washington Commanders still stand out as a fit.
In this story:

The Washington Commanders reportedly ruled themselves out of contention for Lamar Jackson and a host of other suitors on Tuesday, but are they truly done pursuing the Baltimore Ravens quarterback

Even after Tuesday's news, Pro Football Talk believes the door is still open for the Commanders to make a "run" at Jackson.

Yes, head coach Ron Rivera did name Sam Howell as their starting quarterback in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. But as Pro Football Talk (PFT) pointed out, that was before the Ravens put the non-exclusive tag on Jackson

"Obviously, Lamar is a better option than Howell from a football standpoint. Jackson would be far more expensive, and the question would become whether the investment makes sense to the team, ..." Pro Football Talk said. "From a football standpoint, he clearly would make the Commanders better."

Signing Jackson even makes sense for off-the-field reasons, as PFT points out. The public reception around current team owner Dan Synder could change with Jackson joining the Commanders if he ultimately decides to keep the team. But it could also be a big deal in the event of a sale.

"If [Snyder] sells and if the team improves under new management, people could be inclined to credit the new owner," PFT says. "But if Snyder adds Jackson before Snyder exits, it will be impossible to not give Snyder credit for making the move."

"Collusion" is a big buzzword around the NFL as teams continue to rule themselves out of the Jackson sweepstakes. The theory is that teams are working together to deny Jackson his desire for a fully guaranteed contract to reset the market for a quarterback.

If this so-called "collusion" is successful in that sense, the Commanders could come out of the woodwork and sign Jackson.
