Byron Leftwich: From Tom Brady to Baltimore? Ravens Interview Fired Bucs Coach

Byron Leftwich has met with coach John Harbaugh about the offensive coordinator job opening in Baltimore.
In this story:

The Baltimore Ravens are waiting on one Super Bowl offensive coordinator but have just met another coach with the same credential.

Byron Leftwich has met with coach John Harbaugh about the job opening in Baltimore, The Athletic tweets, Leftwich having been let go by Tampa Bay after a run that included a Super Bowl.

The Ravens have spoken to a dozen candidates, with Leftwich joining a list that Baltimore hopes also includes Eric Bieniemy, presently prepping to help coach Kansas City in the Super Bowl against the Eagles.

There are a handful of those top assistants who have already interviewed twice, surely a sign of Harbaugh's seriousness about them.

But Leftwich’s resume as an offensive coordinator is an intriguing one.

He was the overseer of QB Jameis Winston infamous 2019 season in which he threw 30 TDs ... but also 30 interceptions. But that Bucs team was also top-three in NFL productivity.

And then along came Tom Brady‘s era in Tampa, with Bruce Arians as the head coach but with Leftwich handed the job of play-caller.

The Bucs were top-three in 2021 in terms of NFL offense but this year dipped toward the bottom of the league. Those sort of ups and downs are part and parcel with the job, if a coach does it long enough ... well, maybe except for Bieniemy, who under Andy Reid with the Chiefs has not been the primary play-caller ... but who does get to work with Patrick Mahomes.

And that credential, with the Ravens looking for someone to work with QB Lamar Jackson, might be the most important one of all.
